For
new plantings, once our soil has been conditioned and made ready for
productive growth, our next step is to treat the seed, bulbs, and
rootings we are getting ready to plant. Interestingly enough, science
can tell us what happens in a seed when planted but cannot tell us why.
Adding to the wonders of this mystery is the fact that the life force
can be locked away in a seed, even for thousands of years, and when
conditions are favorable, a plant will still spring forth.
To lay dormant, seeds dry up and must stay dry for
a period of time. Only after the seed has been appropriately dried,
with the reintroduction of moisture (and the "burying" or planting of
the seed away from sunlight in a dark place -- usually the soil) will
the seed begin to sprout new life. Because the shell or seed casing is
designed to protect the tiny life force within the seed, penetration by
moisture, where the seed can draw from it, does not usually occur
speedily. It takes time for the moisture to slowly soften the outer
layers and begin to seep in. And it takes time for the seed
to be awakened by the presence of the moisture when it arrives.
The
timing of this process is necessary because of the physics involved.
But the timing can also be critical when other factors enter into the
equation which might challenge the amount of time remaining after
germination to see a plant or crop reach maturity while weather
conditions are still favorable. Sections of the world which have short
growing seasons or places where floods or adverse circumstances have
artificially shortened the growing time would benefit by having a
product which could more quickly transport moisture within the hardened
seed casing and deliver nutrients in a more timely and efficient manner
to the seed and the resulting sprout. The same is true for bulbs --
notoriously hard and stubborn -- and rootings which are tender and
vulnerable like newborn babies and need every advantage in order to
make it.
This
time, the lesson is not so much about chemistry (though there is some
of that involved). It is more about physics. Fortunately,
again what we need to know is pretty simple.
We see water as a liquid, so it is hard for us to
picture that it is really made up of countless small particles. When a
liquid
(comprised of kazillions of small
particles) passes through a membrane, as in the case of the seed's hard
outer shell, the speed at which absorption can take place is
dependent upon the size of the openings in the membrane compared to the
size of the water or liquid particles. It is much like passing
gravel or sand through a screen. Smaller particles pass through first.
Too large particles don't pass at all.

Upstart SBRTM
is available in concentrated form for diluting/premixing as well as
"RTU" (Ready To Use) in quarts, gallons, 4 gallon packs, 55 gallon
drums, and 250 gallon "totes". It can be spritzed with a small spray or
squirt bottle (practical for light use or house or office plants, not
recommended for wide spread application), or applied with a pressurized
garden sprayer, a garden hose applicator, a tractor-pulled multi-furrow
tank fed sprayer, or rigged to an irrigation system. However, owing to
the delicate size and condition of seeds, bulbs, and rootings, care
should be exercised and control maintained over the force of any kind

While a 1 quart RTU spray bottle is very convenient, especially for
working with house or office plants, it is not as economical as buying
a larger concentrate and mixing with chlorine-free water. Pound for
pound, container for container, shipping weights are the same whether
purchasing a concentrated or diluted product. Where one ounce of
concentrate can be mixed on site with a whole gallon of good water, it
makes better sense to buy the concentrate and pay shipping and
container costs once instead of 128 times.
Generally.
General mixing guidelines are one ounce of product to one gallon of chlorine-free water. 1
Gallon of RTM ("Ready to Mix"),
mixed with 128 gallons of chlorine-free water should treat the average
acre. Treatment should saturate soil. seeds, rootings, or grafted areas. When
cleaning bare root stock, try TWO ounces of product per gallon of
chlorine-free water. Mixture concentrations and coverages are
suggestions only, as seed types and other conditions will vary.
Heads Up.
Product concentration
is formulated to be somewhat "forgiving". Treatment should saturate soil along with the seeds. Mixture concentrations and coverages are
suggestions only, as seed types and other conditions will vary. However, if applied in too
concentrated a form, it tends to dissolve oil and wax protection from
leaves. Do not exceed recommended mixing ratio without spot testing
before use. Preparation.
(Concentrate) Fill hose-powered sprayer reservoir with full strength
concentration from the bottle. Set
dilution/delivery dial to ONE (1) OUNCE per ONE (1) GALLON OF
WATER. Consult full instructions if using any application
other than a hose-powered sprayer.
Application.
Saturate seeds, bulbs, or rootings (“SBR”) thoroughly and let them soak
for at least fifteen (15) minutes. Plant in normal configurations.
When
cleaning bare root stock, try TWO ounces of product per gallon of
chlorine-free water.
Saturate the soil after planting. Rewet the new plantings
every 3 or 4 days for one week. Water normally between and
thereafter. Rewet sprouts from top to bottom after new growth
averages about 15" high. Follow up with CleanPlantsHappyPlants RSVP*
PLANT WASH STABILIZER/MAINTAINERTM
on mature plants
as directed every two to three weeks between quarterly
treatments of CleanPlantsHappyPlants
RSVP* PLANT SCRUB INITIALIZER/BOOSTERTM
